John May, LivingSand artist/sculptor resides in Fort Lauderdale, Florida where his interest in sand sculpting began.

After graduating college, John worked as a graphic designer and budding artist. By chance he was introduced to sand sculpting at a local contest and became fascinated by the unique medium and process. Gradually he developed his skills and began sand sculpting professionally for a well-known, international sand sculpting company.

This afforded John the opportunity to gain invaluable experience working on large scale, high profile projects around the world alongside some of the top sand sculpting professionals.

With two young daughters at home John’s focus changed from international travel to more local endeavors. This allowed him to break out on his own and truly explore his passion for sand sculpting and art.

Recently, John was selected as one of 16 South Florida artists to compete in Gator Glam where artists were given a 7-foot tall fiberglass alligator to transform into a unique work of art in celebration of Sawgrass Mills Mall’s twentieth anniversary. John’s theme combined his love for sand sculpture and his hometown beaches; transforming the alligator into a sand sculpture on Fort Lauderdale beach, complete with a replica of the famous Fort Lauderdale beach wall, sand sculpting tools and seashells. This sand covered reptile was awarded third place in the overall competition and was auctioned off for charity in October 2010. Today it remains on display at the mall as part of the Mall’s permanent art collection.

With over a decade of professional sand sculpting experience, John remains part of an elite group of artists who travel the world creating amazing sculptures in sand for special events, grand openings, promotions, fairs and festivals and more. John has also developed unique corporate team building events on the beach and offers sand sculpting classes for kids of all ages,
